Sometimes technology likes to challenge our sanity threshold. And your device not powering on is undoubtedly one of those times. There could be several reasons why your phone won't turn on: a hiccup in the software, the battery needs a bit more charge, or a clumsy (but accidental) mishap.

Either way, if your device doesn't turn on, here are a few things you can try.

Restart your device

The first thing you should try is to do a simple restart of your phone.

  1. Press and hold the Power button for up to 10 seconds
  2. Release the button when you feel your phone vibrate, or you see the screen power on

Force restart your device

If that doesn't work, try forcibly restarting your phone. You're going to hold a couple of buttons on the phone. And don't worry, rebooting your device this way shouldn't erase any information.

  1. Press and hold the Power and Volume-Down buttons for up to 10 seconds
  2. Release the buttons when you feel your device vibrate, or you see the screen power on

Check if your phone charges

Have you charged your device? It may sound silly, but it's possible your phone just needs to be charged—or that it didn't correctly charge when you plugged it in.

Plug the charger into your phone

If the screen doesn't immediately light up, it means your battery is completely drained. And like you at the end of a long day, it needs to rest and recharge for a bit before it can get going again.

Keep the charger plugged into your phone. When you see the charging screen appear, or a red LED light to the left of the camera notch, you should be able to turn on your device. It can take up to one hour but could be as fast as a few minutes.

Your phone isn't charging

If you don't see the charging screen or the red LED light within one hour, check to make sure:

  • The USB-C cable and the power adapter are both plugged in firmly
  • There's no damage to the USB-C cable or power adapter
  • There's no debris in the USB-C port on your device

If there's debris or lint in the USB-C port, it could be interfering with the connection between the charging cable and your device. Blow out the port with a few blasts from a can of compressed air—not your lungs (this isn't a Nintendo cartridge, and that never worked, anyway). You can also remove the debris using a small object like a pin. Just make sure not to scrape the sides of the port.

If your device still doesn't receive a charge, try using a different USB-C cable or power adapter (or both). If your device is now charging, the fault is likely with your cable or adapter. Reach out to Support to check if you're eligible for a replacement.

Factory reset from Fastboot mode

If none of the above worked, you can try a more advanced option of performing a factory reset of your device from Fastboot mode.

Was it an accident?

If none of the above worked, it's possible your phone isn't turning on because of something else. Did your Essential Phone have an accident? Like going for a swim thanks to a "friend" who pushed you (and it) into a pool? Or maybe it was unsuccessful in its attempt at Parkour?

While Essential Phone is water-resistant, it's not waterproof. And if your device was submerged in any liquid—even temporarily—that could be causing the issue. Or, if it took a nasty fall, there could be a loose connection. If so, here are a few things that might help:
